UNESCO World Heritage
In the region, you’ll find no fewer than 4 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Each one is unique and well worth a visit!
Woudagemaal
A unique steam pumping station that keeps our feet dry. The largest still-operational steam pumping station in the world dates back to 1920 and is still used by Wetterskip Fryslân during periods of high water levels. There is an interactive exhibition that tells the story of Frisian water management and the effects of climate change. Experience the Woudagemaal from the inside with a VR headset or take a walk around the pumping station.
Schokland
Former island in the middle of the Northeast Polder. A unique combination of cultural history, archaeological discoveries, and remarkable nature. Here you will find the remains of fishermen’s houses, the church of Ens, and enormous boulders from the penultimate ice age. Visit the museum and explore on foot or by bike the place between land and water where people lived for centuries.
The Koloniën van Weldadigheid
A unique piece of Dutch history! In 1818, General Johannes van den Bosch founded the first agricultural colonies to give people a chance to escape poverty and build a dignified life. At the Museum De Proefkolonie in Frederiksoord, among other places, you can see, hear, and read all about it. A wonderful museum for young and old alike!
Planetarium
The oldest working planetarium in the world. The Planetarium Room and its impressive system of gears form the oldest planetarium in the world that is still in operation. But there’s much more to see! Eisinga’s former wool combing workshop, astronomical instruments, a film room, temporary exhibitions, and a focus on modern astronomy.
